I think you are a very vain person. Just because you have three bachelors degree's doesn't mean what you believe is the absolute truth. Do you know what is going to happen in 2012? Maybe you should drop your delusions of grandeur and have a open minded view a few times life. Maybe one day you will be shocked to find a layman actually had a slight clue in his thinking. Do you have any proof your expertise? Cause you kinda sound like a real fake to me.

If you like I`ll enlighten both of you, just because you have read and researched something doesn`t guarantee you are right,if I wrote a story now in Gaelic and got both of you to translate it,you would probably end up with two different versions,in most languages one word or sentance can have many meanings eg:pair of tits.

Just because the king of Palenque believed people would still be celebrating his anniversary in 4772 doesn't mean he didn't believe we're in for a monumental change at the end of the 2012. So, I'll say it one last time, so maybe you'll comprehend what I'm saying here. You can declare your grandiose education all you like, there IS more to it. It's as simple as that.

Now, a question you skipped entirely. What does the end of a long count period signify in Maya mythology? How are these periods generally believed to end? Why is it that the collapse of the Maya civilization is thought to have occurred between the 8th and 9th centuries, right at the end of one of these periods (March 13, 830)?

I didn't ask when the calendar "ends". I asked when the long count stops, which is different. The way the Maya calendar works you could predict future events for a million years, so finding certain areas that extended the calendar doesn't change the fact that the Popol Vuh stops on Dec. 21, 2012, again more to the topic then you suggested. This also doesn't change that regardless of when the calendar may end, the long count age we are currently in ends on Dec. 21, 2012, again MORE TO IT.

The Quiché share a great connection to the Classic Maya in traditions, mythology and calendar (which you admit stops on Dec. 21, 2012) Certainly there is no evidence to that they necessarily tought this to be the end of the world (other than the end of the calendar) but you're trying to discount the Quiché and the Popol Vuh entirely which is a joke, and only shows your pompous and bias nature in regard to my original statement, which is that there is more to this topic then you admit.

First, I didn't make any claim of trying to "enlighten you". I asked you to enlighten yourself, because I find your attitude towards this topic to be laughable. It's obvious you're only here to show off your education, and not to actually take part in a give and take discussion. Although you're wrong in your vain assumption that I've read up on "little else", the Popol Vuh is one of the most important pieces of historical literature available when it comes to studying the "Classic Maya".

I know because I study the Maya culture, both ancient and modern, and know that the Maya abandoned the Long Count calendar over a thousand years ago. Only the ancient Maya of the Southern and Northern Lowlands used this calendar and their post-2012 dates at sites such as Palenque prove that the ancient Maya didn't see that as the end of their calendar.
JasawChan (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
It is not clear how many creations the Classic Maya believe preceded their own. The important thing to note is that their calendar hits the Long Count position 13.0.0.0.0 on Dec. 21, 2012 but there is no evidence they considered this to be the end of the world. It is no different than our own year 2000. After 2000 came 2001. After 13.0.0.0.0 comes 13.0.0.0.1. The Maya at Palenque recorded future events to the year 4772. Obviously the Maya calendar doesn't end in 2012.

Your questions reveal that you've read up on the Popol Vuh and little else. The Popol Vuh is a 16th century Quiche Maya document recording their mythology. They are separated from the Classic Maya by hundreds of miles, 1000 years and a completely different culture and language (Quiche is a Mayan language not mutually intelligible with the Classic period Choltian language). The Popol Vuh discusses the 4 creations; only the Aztec believed in 5 suns.
