I interpreted it as the trip freaking Dave out to the point of near insanity, and maybe showing Dave's reaction would fuel the same reaction in the audience (at least it did for me)

Im 21 and just recently saw this about a month ago. Absolutely amazing. Why do people say the makers were on drugs when they made this? Some people just have brilliant minds. Not all of us have to take drugs to make something like this, or appreciate it for that matter.
