You should listen to him live - than you would know what he meant. You can even here the space between two single notes while he is playing. This is not arts fartsy - it is fantastic.

Well...a good understanding of SOME amount of complex, urm...concepts and stuff, shall we say, is essential to mature piano playing. But you know, I gotta say - we are entitled to have our opinion and say it, but not force it on others without giving them room to answer with their own. And most annoyingly, Shiff, without giving the performer to respond or even play her own interpretation, is doing precisely that!!!

Oh, and the hall was silent when he came back. It has never been so quiet before or since.

I once attended a concert of his where people were coughing so much, he stopped playing and told the audience to get all the coughs out of their systems, and then left the stage. He came back a few minutes later and started the piece over again. That particular venue can be like a sanitarium sometimes. Old people are so annoying :/ Still, he's the first performer I've ever seen object to it in that way, it was quite charming :)

philosophical approach? its just playing a piano! you dont really need all this complex bs to learn and love schubert! maybe waiting a little longer then usually to play certain parts in a piece help it. but silence isnt the most beautiful thing in music. and he is probably talking all artsy fartsy to impressive people! |
