i don't think its a tattoo. i think he scratched it into his arm. hes mentioned it a few times and said 1979 is scratched on his arm.

JFK just uses the overdrive on his amp. but i recommend either the big muff pi or the boss bass overdrive. the big muff is actually a guitar pedal but it has huge low end so its perfect for bass, and the boss is specially designed for bass, and will give you a more modern sound. both are good, the big muff is cheaper and is built stronger, but its a lot bigger. BTW lots of bassists use the big muff so don't be scared to try it just 'cause its a guitar pedal.
