He did sing it but its not his song.it was a poem writen by Dan Sheahan an irishman while in queensland australia. It was then adapted into a song by Gordon Parsons and later sung by Slim Dusty and became a hit. Wilf Carter does it as a cover and even says in a video on youtube that its a slim dusty song.
