Ronnie wrote a morbid song in particular about 'prince charming' gary rossington and his love for ludes and his car crash in which he drove into an oak tree. The plane hit many trees however ronnie himself his not. he sufferred a broken leg and a externally just a bruise on his forehead, the doctor later telling rossington that it was probably from the soft corner of a TV or such due to the plane coming to an abrupt stop and everything piling on top of ronnie.

the song is about falling head first into an addiction and it being the cause of your premature demise

That's not the point he was making. The plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zandt threw him into a tree, killing him by blunt trauma to the head. He obviously didn't sing about a plane crash b4 it happened.

He hit a tree, but wasn't impaled. If I remember correctly, the autopsy report stated he barely had a scratch. I think he died of a basal skull fracture (the same thing that killed Dale Earnhardt) from the impact.
