A USMC F-18 pilot explained to me in August that he keeps his hands off the stick because the force from the steam catapult launch could cause him to jerk the stick in a way that would mess up his takeoff an possibly cause a catastrophic accident. He keeps his hands clear during the catapult sequence. As soon as he clears the deck, he puts his hands on the stick and pulls up.

Anyone out there old enough to remember when that Airman (the old "Airman First Class") stoled the C-130; believe this is when I was in Germany (around 68' or 69). Was going to fly it to the States...problem, ahh duhhh was the fuel quantity required to make that flight. He didn't get very far.

umm no... when it is on the Deck locked on to the cat. the pilot puts full power and then puts his hands up to brace him self while the deck crew launches him, the jet doesnt take off by its self.

Actually, the F-18 is more modern. When you watch an F-18 take off from the deck, watch the pilot's hands. You will see him keep his hands up on the handles, in plain view. That is because the F-18 takes off by itself. He keeps them in sight so that everyone knows he will not screw up the take-off. let the computer do it. |
