Three guitars might be a bit too much for certain songs, but that's the only way to nail some of them, like Paranoid Android, Lucky and My Iron Lung. And also it's very useful so Jonny can leave the guitar and play something else, like on No Surprises - ed plays the riff, thom the acoustic, jonny plays the xylophone... there's no other way this song could be done. There's also plenty of other tracks that can only be played in that kind of setup.
